What does it mean when someone writes down ‘Slash Chords’ in a piece of music? What do all these symbol dictate to a performer, and how should one read them?

What does it mean when they talk about the 1st position of the neck?
It generally means to play guitar within the first 3 or 4 frets
Then there’s second position, third position, etc.
