Posted by: Walt in Blogroll, tags: SoftwareI tries my best to compile an decent list. So below are a bunch of freeware games/lessons/tutorials, that you should look up. I understand music can be difficult, and I always refer my students to check out software that costs a little bit of money. truth is, you usually get whatyou pay for, but if you’re on a tight budget, then maybe one or two of these products could be for you
Free educational Music software
NoteCard Freeware for Windows. Educational software that will give you drill at recognizing music notes. NoteCard is a simple but slick music flashcard program that will have you recognizing the musical notes in no time - vital for good sight-reading. Work through twelve levels as your skill builds.
Homestudy Institute Of Drums Free downloadable mini-homestudy course for beginning drummers.
Impro-Visor A free music notation program for MAC, Linux and Windows, designed to help jazz musicians compose and hear solos similar to ones that might be improvised. The objective is to improve understanding of solo construction and tune chord changes.
Hear and Play has a FREE music course designed to help you with your ear training. Their also one of my supporters and that means alot - because they make it possible for me to teach you music lessons, and since I only allow reputable names to sponsor me, then you can bet its a fantastic course.
In addition, there are a bunch of other pieces of music software to check out:
Adventus Incorporated - [Win] Company that features the package called ‘Piano Suite’, which teaches users to play piano, sight read music, and compose via the PC and a MIDI keyboard.
Ars Nova Music Software - This company, located in Kirkland (Washington), publishes educational music software.
Myriad/Guillion Bros. - [Win-Mac] Company that produces “Harmony Assistant” and “Melody Assistant”, two programs for computer-assisted tunes writing and composition.
Pianomouse.com - [Win] Company that develops an educational CD Rom series for children.
Tesco Enterprises: Adventus Products - Retailers of the Adventus Piano Suite package.

I also used Finale Notepad (free version of their full notation suite). It’s very limited, but great for those basic 32 bar tunes.
Also, http://musictheory.net is a great site (no downloads or registration required) that I used to use for students. For teachers in tech-savvy districts, this site is amazing on smartboards.
