Arpeggios Part 1

Arpeggios sound awesome, and they create a lot of tension (and sometimes release) in music! The trick to playing arpeggios is learning how to fingerpick or alternate pick. These two techniques are difficult at first, but allow you to play one note at a time – whereas a technique like strumming usually refers to playing every string at once (which in turn creates your chord).

The only difference between a chord and a note is that a chord consists of more than one note. So in your music try and include some arpeggios and chords. Mix it up and have fun with it! Notice how the song develops as you use arpeggios. Maybe the song needs chords, or maybe the song needs silence.

What are Arpeggios?

Simply put – arpeggios are broken chords. So now instead of playing every note together at once (AKA chords), simply play one note at a time.

Lots of famous guitar players like Paul Gilbert, Pat Metheny, and more use arpeggios all the time. Everyone from Blink 182, to John Mayer, to Rihanna has songs using arpeggios!
