What is Drop C Tuning?

Drop C tuning is C G C F A D. An easy way to think of this is as Drop D, but then bringing every string down a whole step.

You can also create a Drop C tuning by bringing down the low E string a third to C. As a result, the old tuning was E A D G B E, and new tuning would be C A D G B E. This, though, is not known as standard Drop C tuning. Big thanks to Joe Lovette for the clarification!

What is Drop D Tuning?

Drop D tuning is similar to Drop C, but instead of tuning to low bass string to C, you simply tune it to D. As a result, the old tuning was E A D G B E, and new tuning would be D A D G B E.

There are also other tunings like DADGAD and GGDGBD. This alternate tuning are usually used by heavy metal groups in order to create a heavier and darker sound. But, folk groups and others have used the tunings in order to have bass notes on the guitar that other wise aren’t available in standard tunings! If the piece of music is in the Key of C, then having a low C in the Bass in Drop C leads for better voice leading. So experiment and have fun!
