This video is based off my Youtube Music Channel. Swing and Straight Eights and Triplets are important to learn.
There are tons of examples of them in all the music you listen to everyday - but you never even realize it. An example of triplets in music is Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Listen to the piece and realize the count (1-2-3 4-5-6) or as it can also be counted (Tri-p-let Tri-p-let)
The definition for a Triplet in music is simply “Three notes in the space of two”. So if you have Eighth note triplets in music, then its “3 Eighth notes in the space of 2 Eighth notes”.
Since two eighth notes equal 1 quarter note (1 beat), then Eighth note triplets are three notes played evenly in one beat.
As for quarter notes - it’s “3 Quarter notes in the space of 2 Quarter notes”, etc.
Still confused? Don’t be, simply watch the tutorial above until you understand it - I promise you’ll get it!

My English teacher once told me to choose a career that never lets you rest, because life is about learning. Life is about triumph over difficulties and obstacles. These obstacles are simply there in order to define who wants things more. Choosing music as my career has been the greatest decision I’ve ever made.
When something is tough, or difficult, then it becomes more appreciated. When something is conquered and reached, it also becomes appreciated. But when something stops, then it becomes dead. You have to go after that desire, that passion to want to learn and better yourself.
In this video, I refer to the Cat String Theory- which I think is a brilliant way of putting things, because it all makes sense. Cat String Theory says that a cat gets bored after it gets the string, and therefore stops playing.
So in everything you do through high school, college, and beyond make sure that you choose a life that is full, and that never lets you stop being, or stop learning. I’m not saying to choose a difficult career, but choose one that allows you to keep pursuing, and continues to push you every day even after you’ve managed to ‘get it’. Even the hardest workers, from Donald Trump, Donny Deutsch, Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway, to Steve Jobs never truly master their trade - they simply become good at it, and better than the rest. Even Olympian Michael Phelps may be the best in the world, but he still continues to learn - every day.
So do everything you can, meet everyone you can, and never stop. Because remember: Life is about the journey as much as it is about the destination.
OK in music you have Sus Chords. I explained them before here and again here, but read this post first. You may be thinking to yourself that Sus Chords are too advanced, or sound too advanced. Well, their not…
In a chord we have a Root, 3rd, and 5th. These note create my chord.
So there’s 7 notes in a major scale, lets base everything off of a C major scale: So the notes are CDEFGABC
So if I were to build up a C Major chord I’d refer to the Root, 3rd, and 5th of the C major Scale - which is CEG.
C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8
Notice how the Root, 3rd, and 5th is CEG. Making sense? No? Ok - hang on…
So here’s the Notes on Guitar applied to sightreading. Click on the image to make it larger:
Above the guitar is the staff notes. So point out the C-E-G and build that note up vertically. That there is a C major. now REPLACE the 3rd with a D (the Sus2) or an F (the Sus4) and just like that you now have a Sus2 (CDG) or Sus 4 (CFG) chord!
So if we were to apply this same concept to an F major Scale (F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F) then The Fsus 2 would be F-G-C and the Fsus4 would be F-Bb-C
So tonight I want you to make up your own Sus chords. And if you play trumpet, flute, or any instrument that doesn’t allow for multiple simultaneous notes then Arpeggiate them with this video lesson #1 and also study this video lesson #2.
